I can’t remember the exact year, very early nineties and I was building a Carl Goldberg “Electra.” I had a friend who was really good at R/C, he was actually good at a lot of things and we flew hang gliders together cross country, if he could keep up. His Electra had a geared Astro motor and this beautiful German folding prop.
I had to have all of that.
Len flew r/c aerobatic planes and he was good, apparently very good. He also flew the helicopter and reported the news for channel 12 here in the valley. Going hang gliding together was a blast! We spent a lot of time together around the campfire and in the air. At Torrey Pines, he flew is slope glider, it was this rocket glider with stubby wings but it flew faast! He would hand me the transmitter and I would do laps but the glider was flying ahead of me! Not the other way around.
Anyway, this time around, I decided to build a short kit modified Radian lovingly called the “FrankenRadian” and I defiantly had to have a Freudenthaler folding prop. I ordered from Aloft but they sent me CAM Z, “Adam, they are much better, they aren’t making the old ones any longer.”
What?
I’m thinking to myself, they look nearly the same, a little bit different in the bend. No, I want the Freudenthaler and finally found mine.
There isn’t much about Rudi Freudenthaler the person, apparently he is a legend but I know there is a story there, probably like my friend Len.
I love this system. It is amazing and works.
I’m sure I’ll own other blades but this propeller is going to connect the young me with the old.
